Well, as a LTP you've stayed enough nights to know it's not common. It's never happened to me or my husband at a Marriott. Occasionally we are asked at check-in if we want a different bed type to get an upgrade.

You were lucky that they still had the rooms available. (and that you are platinum, so the manager knew he should give you the rooms!) This happened to us at a Hilton recently, and since we checked in late in the evening, they had no rooms left. Hilton doesn't have a room-type guarantee but they threw a few points our way for the inconvenience.
