As a very simple point, and this is covered in the avios spending guides others have mentioned, the economy traveller can do quite well by applying the avios discount to cash purchases. Sometimes even at 1.0p value. Purchasing this way also attracts avios / TPs on the booking.
Now, not always the way to go (especially if 3rd party site cheaper than ba.com !) but a good option to think about.
