I don't think anything has changed and this is still the basic principle as Globaliser has pointed out but happy to be corrected. You do have to fly from the same zone though so in your case the East coast.

Provided the distance between the open-jaw is less than either jaw, anything is possible. For example, for A-B, C-A, the distance between B and C must be less than A-B and C-A.
