Because it's New Years week...and because Las Vegas is a popular destination for New Years...there simply aren't that many seats available, which drives up the cost.

Emergencies happen all the time. Unless you have travel insurance, chances are those emergencies won't be covered.

With all due respect and sympathy, one has to ask why it is the airlines fault if something happens, even death? Does the local restaurant give you a break because of a death? Can you buy food or clothes cheaper because of a death? Cheaper hotel or car rental rates?

Of course the answer is no. The airline is selling a product, just like any other business. They may care, but why should they reach into their pocket and give someone money?
