What OP wanted was SW to just let their friend on the earlier plane with no additional payment. While that would have been nice, it's not required. (Of course the ticket was more that what she "originally booked", but... It would seem to me that some of the additional fare could have been paid for by savings of a couple of nights in Vegas so the husband could have come with the wife.
