It seems a way of life in the UK to go to restaurants to find they are "out" of something.

Except BA is not a restaurant? You're on an airplane with limited storage. It's not unreasonable that they would run out of options. Think of the wasted food if they loaded enough for each passenger to have their first choice.
I really wish BA could get organized enough to allow preordering on all long haul flights. Throwing food out is a real shame, there are starving children in the US.
