You can purchase a paid FC ticket in your friends name on one PNR and a paid coach ticket in your name on another PNR. When you board, you take the FC seat you paid for, and the friend takes the coach seat that you paid for.

If your upgrade comes through, then the friend joins. If it doesn't, see paragraph above.
