Like you I am MM Gold (which got upgraded to Plat for the second half of 2016). My wife is my designated companion. When she flies solo, she flies with my status, i.e. gets E+ on check in. In order to get upgrades when we fly together, we have to split PNRs, and then it's pretty random who gets them.
