OP seems not well-versed in the lingo so maybe give them a bit of a pass? It sounds like
- friend and friend's husband were in Las Vegas
- grandmother in Baltimore died
- friend was dismayed at not being able to return to Baltimore earlier w/o paying a fare difference
One anecdote is not data but ~2 years ago when a "visit dad in the hospital" trip turned into "plan a funeral" trip, United let me postpone the return leg of that trip by a week without charging any fare difference or change fee (I did have to show a copy of the death certificate). I did not have any status on UA at the time, FWIW.
