2 words: Travel Insurance.

Most airlines don't have bereavement fares anymore because of the vast misuse of them.

Because it's New Years week...and because Las Vegas is a popular destination for New Years...there simply aren't that many seats available, which drives up the cost.

Emergencies happen all the time. Unless you have travel insurance, chances are those emergencies won't be covered.
