Once you have been ticketed and confirmed, I would phone all the airlines to at least get a seat "reserved" as I'm not sure if it's a full flight how they'll handle this situation.
What I am trying to understand or confirm, is what happens when I call AA to try to confirm a seat for my 'infant' of 2yrs+ for an AA-operated BA-ticketed segment?

Will AA try to provide a seat if available? hold a seat for the child?, or simply say "we are not honoring BA's policy in this matter and we want payment in full for a one-way child fare for our segment" ?
(which BTW from my research is actually several multiples of the entire adult fare I'm paying for RT CW tickets!!)

I get the feeling that it may be more complicated to get the free seat on the return trip if it involves partner flights, what I don't understand is whether it is impossible, or just complicated.
