I'm about to submit a claim for expenses incurred as a consequence of the recent cancellations due to fog.

When I start the process on BA.com, I get the following message:

You should make a claim with your travel insurer in the first instance. If you have expenses that either you were not successful in claiming or which are not covered by your policy, you may claim for only these expenses in the form below.
My understanding is that you should try to recover the costs from the airline first, and then rely on the insurance for anything else that the airline didn't cover.

Is this just a way for BA to avoid having to paying up? Should I actually claim with BA first?
