There is absolutely no way that Marriott / SPG are going to screw members like that. 25 stays in 2017 will get you Platinum status in 2018. What is less certain is whether SPG will still offer exactly the same Platinum benefits in 2018.

At some point this year we expect to hear news about the combined program going forward. But this should only involve the stay/night requirements during 2018 for status in 2019 and beyond.
