If the battery of your mobile device overheats and/or catches fire while it's charging (which is not unheard of, see the whole Galaxy Note 7 fiasco), you will notice it immediately if you're using it. If it happens while you're asleep, well, I imagine that would be a problem, especially if it happens in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
Interesting. I understand for the Galaxy Note 7 being outright banned, but if charging your phone was so dangerous I am sure it would be banned outright by the aviation authorities, no?
