does "go to gate" have any meaning?

I saw the instructions and went. Nobody boarding. In fact flight was later announced as delayed (broadcast through terminal).

I know airlines want you to get there early, but I am beginning to think "go to gate" does not mean anything. I used to think it meant the plane is waiting for you
