I separated my wife (no status) from my PNR to test this theory. Flight has been F7 for the longest time and it is now T-23 and I have NOT been upgraded. I just checked myself in and was put on the upgrade waitlist. I then checked my NO STATUS wife in and lo and behold, she was offered to upgrade to first class for $55!

Lots of open seats in FC but no upgrade for this plat at the promised 72 hr window, however they are quite willing to sell FC for $55 to kettles.
Above is a TOD example. EXP not cleared, but non-status companion (on separate PNR) offered a TOD.

I haven't heard or seen any instances where AA sold upgrades prior to giving them out, according to the program rules.

Regardless, feel free to create a thread for a new topic. If it would be a better fit elsewhere, it may get merged.
See the above post. TOD offered to non-status person, when EXP was on the upgrade wait list.
