I am staying at Crowne Plaza Bangkok, but before I go on I'd like to say I have stayed at many BKK IHG properties...always paid out of my own pocket and also used some reward stays. I have always received a room upgrade....And sometimes even a lounge access. I don't demand a room upgrade, but expect what is outlined in terms and conditions...Nothing more and nothing less which is category 1 upgrade.
So, I booked an award stay at the above hotel and apparently I am only expected to get an upgrade on paid stays. I mean...Is this the only hotel chain that operates this way? Which brings me to my next point.
I feel stupid for not giving Hilton my hard earned cash which would make me remain diamond for the next 12 months. Instead I kept staying with this joke of a chain, collecting useless points.
1. You already knew the answers ie
a)Lounge access at HI/CP is not an upgrade entitlement even on paid nights and few provide foc
b)space available upgrades do not apply to Award/PB nights
c)Why not read FT log per the individual hotel
(NB .. None of the IHG BKK/Thailand hotels currently give lounge access foc although some used to 2years ago )
2. You failed on basic , research your hotel treatment before a booking/stay. CP BKK used to be great Eite (Plat) treatment, but is now very much poorer. If unchanfged (not stayed recently) CP BKK targets Japan Tour groups today and was no different back in the good days
3. That said CP BKK used to be a very rewarding property for Platinums (top status pre July2015) . You are just staying 2years too late
This all changed circa Feb2015 at CPP BKK, no more lounge on award nights and later I think not even on paid (i stopped going)
a)Paid stays Platinum as top Status received Club Room with Lounge
b)even as Spire on PB I received Upgrade and Lounge
(Actually Deluxe Room wth Lounge is better here than Club Room)

Shame about Thai lounge access, but outside b/f is cheap so no big issue, and with cost of a few 7-11/FamilyMart beers/sodas for inroom consumption, free drink in lounge was never worth paying for lounge access
