The only thing you appear to have done wrong is not booking back to back. This worked OK for you today but it's really a bad idea to allow 3 hours between flights.
As with most of your advice I will be taking it to heart, the dread filled me when I saw looming strikes and suchlike. This little alert only served to cause more undue panic. I had easyjet tickets ready to book from Gatwick but I know it was a dangerous game to play.

I shall now sit and enjoy the lounge for a couple of hours before heading back to London. Thank you all, this trip has only come about due to the tips and advice on forum. A site which is an enjoyable place to be even just as a spectator.
