That may be true in Australia, but not in the US. US regulations re: time share pitches (whether Marriott, Hilton, Starwood) might be more regulated than Australia.
Also, this Marriott timeshare sweepstakes (open until Jan 19 for those in the US interested, excluding New Jersey & Puerto Rico) requires an opt-in - and not an opt-out - in order to be contacted, and mentions if you opt-in, the contact can be via snail mail, email or telephone.

I've been a member of Marriott for many, many years & have never received a telemarketing call. Not to say it hasn't happened to others, but I don't think it's the norm.
