I just booked an eticket on United, and the UA website has the language that is at the top of this thread, i.e.- no 7 day limitation. However, when I read the fine print on the e-mail confirmation, the e-mail does have the legal language: "if you cancel the reservation within 24 hours of purchase and if the reservation is made one week or more prior to scheduled flight departure."

Just confirmed. The policy is what it says. If ticket is purchased within a week, 24-hr free cancellation policy is void.
