The United had told me at booking that I should be able to use the lounge in HKG. Also that my luggage should transfer thru also. Does anyone have any experience with this or was this mis-information since the Cathay leg is not part of the Star Alliance? Thanks for the assist.
As a UA Gold, you will have access to the United Club in HKG in both directions. You will not have any lounge access at BKK. On the return (HKG-SFO), you could also access the SQ or TG lounge at HKG.

UA should check your bags through at SFO.
