Pretty foolish game to play on the time line. Look closely the DESCRIPTION on the transactions of your FB and see how it says.
When Staples "tested" the card, the $20 spent probably was still in Pending stage on the card, not yet posted, hence Staples could "see" the money.
When Staples actually ship the product, it will then BILL the card, and at that time, the $20 probably is posted as that would be a few days from when you initially ordered at Staples, usually 3 to 5 days lag before Staples ships, and BILLS. At that time, you are $20 short for the order - do not know if Staples would charge the $20 to your CC to make up the difference, or to cancel your order.
Your AMEX offer is running out of time - the BILL (post) transaction has to be by 12/31 and now if your order is canceled, it would not be enough time for you to make it up.
