Not sure if this is still relevant to you, but I did the crossing there in February this year, while travelling by bus from Kampala to Bukoba, TZ. I would certainly recommend using an international bus service as opposed to piecing together transport yourself, especially if your Swahili isn't that good. I used Jaguar Bus which, aside from leaving Kampala at some godawful time (4am?) was fine and pretty quick, taking about 6 hours to Bukoba including the border. That bus continues to Mwanza as well.

The border was very easy and straightforward, by the standards of the region, with minimal delays. You won't have any issues, especially if you've ever done overland travel in this part of the world.

The Ugandan side is in an older building, and was a little more chaotic, but the Tanzanian operation is in a very new building. I was told, in February, that the new Tanzanian building was shortly to become a joint-use facility by both countries, but I'm not sure if that has happened yet.

In short, I wouldn't hesitate to use the border again.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
