It will be interesting to see how rebookings/irrops/SDC handle this. People seem to have issues with the -UP fares in certain circumstances (i.e. their first ticket can turn into economy for unknown reasons), so maybe the -N component will also randomly disappear also?
IME, in IRROPS, much of the time the original fare code becomes irrelevant anyway. I've probably been booked in a higher fare code, sometimes full Y, at least half the time. As I understand it, its often easier for an agent to book in a fare class with available space vs. one that isn't available at all (very possible anything in N has an advance purchase requirement). Sometimes the system is smart enough to do mileage based on original class booked, sometimes not (though its much smarter about doing the former these days than it used to be, and with RDM based on $ spent now, less of an issue). I've even snagged last minute upgrades at the gate in this kind of circumstance at least once, where I was booked into full Y during IRROPS, which brought me to the top of the upgrade list that was about 10 long, and I got the last seat.
Point is, the N might disappear anyway in IRROPS.
