Umm, just a few times (since it's the season of goodwill).

From JFK, if your AMS flight is from LHR, there is close to zero chance of the check-in agent allowing you to short check your bag, unless there is an overnight stay involved, or you are continuing on via LGW or LCY. People do this so as not to take the final flight, or so I'm told, and so they're not encouraging this practice.
