No, he's saying is that their intention is to allow you to add your number in such a way that you get all benefits, but do not accrue miles.

I'm going to be trying this out again soon. I'm booked on an F Aeroplan ticket out of another SE's account, with the first segment on AC only confirmed in Y. So my status really matters.

On the way back, we're flying long-haul J out of my account, so his status matters for, at the very least, meal priority. And concierge assistance if stuff goes sideways (though it's one PNR, and my number is on it, so probably not a huge deal there).
