Others will have much more insight into technicalities but my main advice:
- Keep all documentation (boarding passes including ones you didn't use)
- Write a detailed letter to AC (maybe after some people have told you what you are entitled to) specifically asking for compensation

This does sound like an involuntarily denied boarding which should get you something

And then wait about a month before they get back to you...
