The first time I encountered this, I asked the GA about my upgrade, and she said "You're not on the list". Followed by her mentioning to her colleague "Oh weird, he's on THIS list but not THAT list."
No poking or prodding on my part.
But hearing that, and then being told "so it's full now" would probably get a reaction out of most people. Luckily for me, J was still wide open in that case.

If you look up your booking, you'll occasionally see things like "HK" on it. Then I read FT and find out what it means.
Or when I call the concierge, I mention "DCS" (when relevant), and suddenly they start talking to me in jargon, and I learn more.

Just talk with the employees, gate agents, concierges etc about it. When they realize you know and understand stuff then they start sharing more stuff.
