I guess it is just for operational reason.

I had once had a last minute J booking on KA621, so couldn't sit together with my wife. At check in, agent said she couldn't do anything to release the F section, KA decided to block it off and the J section was very full.

So I had to change my seat on board and that's when DM came into play. Just a very nice ask "my wife is sitting at 11C, is there any chance we could sit together?". FA talked to ISM, and few second later, we were invited into the little F section.
