About half my long distance flights are on AA. I do as suggested above, make the reservation online and then call AA to add my AS number. There's never been a problem, and for at least the past two years my miles have appeared reliably in my AS account within a week to 10 days of the flight.

It would be nice if AA.com allowed us to enter our AS number online, it would save us (and their reservations agents) time.
