If it is not caught at check in, hotel surely will catch this at check out or even long after you check out when they cannot reconcile their book, i.e. not a second cert or points in the book to offset the 2nd night. The hotel would either deduct points from your account or bill your CC on file at check in. It could be months later. I would not count on that you will get a 2nd free night without a cert to offset it. I had a hotel charged my CC 5 months after the stay when they did not know how to handle the free night accounting.
