You could find hotels enforce rules like the owner of gifted cert/fn/pb/award night must be there.

Saltlake/IHG are now saying va t+c's that Additional guest name must be notified to IHG a minimum 7nights before a stay.... onbiously to stop the reselling of points/FN nights etc.
I booked a four night stay as 2 for me and 2 for my wife with her cert.The 2 of us stayed in the same room and the hotel regarded the reservations as separate,but they were quite happy.We used points for the nights between the weekends.
