If the upgrade certs your friend is trying to use for your February flights are certs that expire on January, than that could be the explanation.

You will need certs that are good for travel on the date of your flight, they will not even show up for flights past the expiration date.

However, if you friend has 2016 GPUs (expiring 31 Jan 2017) and your friend re-qualified for 1K in 2017, they can have 2 of the 2016 certs extended to April 2017, http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unite...x-2-gpu-s.html but your friend will have to make the request.
