I got the impression you were in a hurry for the answer because you wanted to get in another trip in 2016 if necessary. I apologize for mis-reading.
Most of the time, the fare-vs-distance question seems to be clear-cut. Most of the gray area seems to be in ticket reissues and paying with TYPs; those sometimes go one way and sometimes the other with no (so-far) detectable pattern.
It's often not obvious which thread a post belongs in. All that is asked is that you stick with just one, unless/until a change is made or advised.
