You are trying to find a last-minute ticket in peak holiday season to a popular destination. Direct flights are usually more expensive than connecting flights. On expedia I have been able to find a return flight on Jet Airways for about £200 less than what you quoted though a return flight involves a long layover in India. You will have to pay a little extra for a shorter layover.
