Sounds like you got unlucky, although the lack of hotel towel service and lack of refills in F I've also experienced multiple times on BA recently.

The best option for such a competitive route (you can literally fly about 25 airlines between LHR and SYD with one stop, as per BA) is to vote with your feet.
