I have no advice for the Atlantic side (outside the area) but I did have a positive experience flying out of RSW! New airport, right off the I-75, 4 concourses and flights from Germany on Air Berlin (apparently, Germans love the Gulf beaches!). RSW has TSA Pre, is much nicer than FLL, and CA snowbirds have both AC & WS flights as well.
