This year I had a DL return trip of NRT>HNL>OGG>SEA>BOS with the HNL to OGG on Hawaiian. (The Narita-Honolulu legs were to fly the 747.) On my trip to Japan a wonderful agent in the HNL Skyclub responded to my questions about how not to encounter the extra charges by compiling everything the ticketing agents would need at NRT to check my bags all the way through to BOS. And then he gave me the instruction to claim my bags at HNL but immediately turn them over to Delta recheck before going over to the inter island terminal.

Worked great, and the agents at NRT were impressed with the compiled info, finding it very useful.
