Note (from the linked article in the above article) that the cops were conducting warrantless SIGINT on passengers.

NJ Transit has stopped eavesdropping on conversations aboard its light rail trains after facing a string of criticism over how it stored and handled the recordings.

A spot check of 10 light rail trains on the Hudson-Bergen and Newark Light rail lines on Wednesday found that the word "audio" on all signs warning of the surveillance had been masked by white tape.

NJ Transit confirmed Wednesday afternoon that it had ended the program.

"Following a careful internal review that involved weighing security benefits, operational necessities and evolving industry practices, NJ Transit has decided to remove the audio recording feature from light rail vehicles," said Nancy Snyder, a spokeswoman.
Interesting that you won't find "Constitutional" or "Civil Liberties" in the spokesholess' statement.
