The reason for the stopover in Amsterdam is to break up the trip for the 4 children traveling (ages 5,7,8,10). The 4 adults have never been to Amsterdam either, nor many other European cities so the stopover will "kill 2 birds with 1 stone". I would prefer a stop over in Rome so will look into this option as well. Actually, I'm open to any "walkable" city for a stop over if you have suggestions.

Amsterdam is a consideration only because there's non-stops from LAX to AMS as well as non-stop from AMS to CPT without changing planes in the middle of the night. Hopefully the return flight from JNB will allow 3 day stop over in Paris.
