I’ve done two premium economy flights from the USA in the past two months - one ATL to LHR on Virgin and one MIA to LHR on BA. The difference was astonishing. I cannot see why anybody would choose to fly premium on BA rather than Virgin. Virgin offered all of the following:

  • Welcome aboard sparking wine
  • All drinks served in proper glasses/china mugs
  • Fairly decent amenity kit
  • Pretzels with first onboard drinks round
  • Cheese and biscuits with main meal as well as dessert
  • Brandy/Kahlua and hot chocolate, tea or coffee after the meal
  • Different breakfast service from economy offering a hot pastry, greek yogurt and granola and fresh fruit. It was actually edible and better than the last breakfast I had in BA Club! The BA economy breakfast box was truly disgusting.

BA offered none of the above and nothing in addition to the Virgin service which was simply far, far superior. As they tend to charge similar prices for the transatlantic routes, I cannot understand how BA are going to continue to be a choice for anybody who has a choice of carrier and reads reviews before flying. I was shocked at how poor it was compared to Virgin, and they didn't even have a great crew to make up for it. No menus were handed round so the crew had to describe the meal choice - "Beef or Italian Pasta". I asked if the "Italian Pasta" was vegetarian "I don't know, we're not chefs just delivering the food". Poor all round!
