Just stay close to Ponte Vecchio, because from there you can get anywhere, then it comes down to budget and property preference. In Venice, staying near Piazza San Marco, or Ponte Rialto, or anywhere between the two, and also staying near the train station, will ruin your trip. You will not want to ever go back to Venice, and will tell people it was horrible, and "you can see Venice in a day."
