Look at the wikipost above. There's no single offer in there with a spend requirement greater than $3000.
So if you were really short $20 of $5k, you actually spend $1980 more than you needed!
What IkeEsq said; this particular offer was for 40k miles after $3k spend in 3 months, 50k after $5k spend in 12 months. My total spend was just shy of $5k, yet I already have the 60k (50k from the offer, 10k from the match) bonus miles in my AA account. My last two cards were actually this very same offer, via targeted mailer.
