I agree with much of what you say.
But in this instance we are not talking about Michelin star service. We are talking about someone denigrating their own product without any provocation. I wouldn't expect that at a low end pizza restaurant. It's perfectly reasonable to expect low paid staff to maintain a basic level of professionalism. It's basic common sense.
If BA are recruiting people that genuinely can't see that is an inappropriate comment in just about any circumstance, then there is something wrong with the process.
