It's the thought that counts and all that. Any gift will be appreciated for the thought you express through it. Same with the inevitable ties, socks and after-shave I'm likely to receive in a couple of weeks.

Malaysians aren't all that different from others. There are clear caveats: although muslims would be able to deal with a bottle of wine with grace, and some might even welcome it, its best to steer clear of alcohol.
Perceived value/exoticness will enhance the pleasure your gift gives. I'm not suggesting diamonds but Belgian-belgian chocolates, or Harrods-type branded goods. Flowers are a great standby, but take care to use a good florist and seek his/her advice on the flowers.
