Especially the Virunga part was really interesting for me, since my wife and I are planning a trip to the National Park in February.
Did you ever consider flying to Goma with Ethiopian rather than to fly to Kigali and cross the border overland?
Also very interesting was the fact that you returned to Goma between the gorilla and volcano treks. In retrospect, would you do this again or would you opt to sleep in one of the lodges in the park? Still a dilemma for us.
Thank you once again for al the info!
Hard to say! We didn't consider the Goma flight because of the core of our trip, but I will certainly use it to leave Gome when I visit again (Inshallah) to see the volcano for more than five minutes. I'm not certain how it would work with getting a Virunga sponsored Visa as apposed to one from Kinshasa. I'm sure the helpful Virunga staff can tell you one way or the other. I think the flight is only once weekly, so it's not exactly easy to plan around.
I think we were happy we returned to Goma (even though the ride from the Gorillas was a long way). I love where we stayed and Goma was fun to walk about besides the two thugs who wanted a bribe.
Mikeno Lodge really looks nice, but for the cost, I'm not so sure. I think for my next visit I would do a bit more than the volcano so the lodge might make sense. If your budget allows, there is no wrong answer.
