The snow was falling and the aircraft (MD80) was covered in snow, we did get de iced at the gate but the taxi and take off happened pretty much straight afterwards.
Probably the only time that I have been a nervous flyer.

Yes in very simple terms, the orange is de-icer, it is quite thin and applied hot to remove any existing ice/snow accumulated on the aircraft. The green is anti-ice and is much thicker so it will cover the control surfaces to prevent further ice/snow build up but then shed at high speed during the take off roll.
