You have good answers already, but allow me to add a few more thoughts.
I can understand why you might not want to change the room reservation. It could change the rate and there might be other reasons.
But I don't understand why your husband does not want to link accounts. Perhaps he does not understand what it means to link an SPG account and a Rewards account. It's only a link of status, with both accounts taking on the same (higher) status. For all other purposes, the accounts remain separate -- with separate balances, separate status qualification, and separate earning of points at Starwood and Marriott brands, as before the merger.
If your husband links his accounts and then checks in with you, he can display his Marriott Rewards Gold Elite card on his smartphone at check-in. The hotel should honor it. If he does not link accounts, neither of you has status wth Marriott, and the hotel should treat it as a no-status stay.
