I remember first seeing it in 2008 as an icon/ribbon for cabin/status tier/group number against the old dark blue/gold style AA had. More recently it has has switched to the softer light blue and white style. But yes it's been in place for at least eight years now. You must frequent other stations that either don't use them or are not set-up properly.
