Cancel a ticket due to Medical Reasons?

Hey there
Many months ago, I bought a ticket on the DME-MUC-DME route with A3 via ATH for just one night. It is starting on Saturday. I bought it on Expedia.
In Moscow, doctors decided to perform me a medical procedure on Thursday, so I won't be fit to fly anywhere.
I called Expedia, and they contacted Aegean. They said they don't accept any medical excuses, either I fly or I loose the money. They also offered me to use the ticket paying 50Eur in any other date in the next 90 days, when the price is the same or lower than the one I paid (if not, I have to pay the difference).
I checked the whole 3 months, and in some cases the fare is over 5000U$S, but in no case is not even similar to what I've paid.
So, what should I do?
Loose my ticket?
Change it for another date I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to do it?
Or present some medical documents proving i'm not fit enough even to climb the stairs of the plane?

Isn't any EU Regulation for this cases???
